Why Youth (heart) Social Network Sites

Reading this article has definitely opened my mind about myspace.  When I used myspace, I never thought about why or how I chose the background that i did or shared certain information about myself.  I remember being so excited  when myspace allowed users to customize their pages.  I would spend so much of my time browsing sites to find the perfect background that reflects me.

Boyd talks about the network public. What this network public means for me as a teacher is that I need to watch myself as to what I put up on my facebook or anything I attach my name to.  That is the first thing I think about. There is also a whole new world that can be opened up in the classroom.  Teacher can introduce blogs, or use youtube videos to teach a lesson or show an example.  There are hundreds of options available. This changes my teaching in many different ways as well.  As I just said before a teacher could show videos to explain a topic, show examples, the class could create a blog and have discussions or even make projects using social networks. Using blogs can also help give a shy students a louder voice because they won't have the pressure of talking aloud in class or having to be put on the spot.  This could inhibit a relationship with students by not having that one on one human interaction and communication. There are many possible art making projects that can be done as well.  You could have the students create a facebook page for a historical figure or a wiki page for any subject, science, history, art that could act as a research paper.  With all of this in mind being a teacher, there are a lot of concerns and precautions that we have to be aware of.  Also censoring many websites would be a good idea.
